UPDATE (11.06): The same media sources that initially reported the $200 million per day Obama India trip, are now reporting that Obama claims to have ‘reached‘ $10 billion in business deals and 50,000 US jobs.
Mainstream media and the White House argue the $200 million per day and 34 warship numbers are incorrect. And while they refuse to disclose true figures, mainstream media and the White House are eagerly reporting, as fact, the ambiguous $10 billion business deals figure and the creation of yet-to-be-seen 50,000 US jobs – all promised to the American people by the same president, who not so long ago, heralded the do-or-die stimulus package, false unemployment rates and phony jobs claims.
(HS Times) Obama will make history for more than one reason during the Nov 6-9 visit. This will be the first time a teleprompter will be used in the nearly 100-feet high dome-shaped hall that has portraits of eminent national leaders adorning its walls.
Considering Scare Force One’s quick trip to Manhattan for a barnstorming photo op with Lady Liberty cost taxpayers $328,835, well, perhaps increased debt and the release of 19 million pounds of CO2 won’t be the only byproducts of Obama’s excursion to India. To quote Michelle Malkin on the continual lack of promised transparency from the White House, “It’s this utter disregard for taxpayer accountability that prompted hundreds of thousands of citizens to take to the streets on Tax Day 2009 for Tea Party protests.”
UPDATE (11.07): (NDTV) About 3,000 people are supposed to join the president. The source revealed that all the 506 rooms [at the Taj] have been booked. “Though the president will be eating food cooked by his own chef, the hotel is preparing Indian, continental, and Chinese buffet for the fleet.” The bar has been stocked with Glenfiddich 40-Year-Old Rare Collection and Dom Perignon Rose Champagne from France. “Wine, whisky and champagne will be stocked in the bar. The bar will not only cater to Obama’s demands, but also to those of his wife Michelle.”
More cars have been booked for the US fleet. “Earlier 150 cars were booked which has now been increased to 225. The company which has been given the responsibility of logistics has been running from pillar to post to get more cars.” The US Consulate had booked Innova cars for sniffer dogs and Toyota and Mercedes Volvo for the rest of the fleet.
All in the name of fear. And all for President Barack Hussein Obama who says America’s ‘fear and frustration‘ is to blame for the intense midterm election cycle threatening to derail the Democratic agenda.
Headline: ‘40 Planes, 3 Choppers, 8 Limos‘
Article: Six armoured cars and 40 aircraft will accompany US President Barack Obama during his three-day visit of India. Details of the elaborate arrangements for the tree-day presidential visit on November 6 were leaked to Indian newspaper earlier this week. According to the Daily Mail, 40 aircraft, including Air Force One, and six heavily armoured cars will follow the president around the country. The entourage will be the biggest ever in terms of logistics and manpower for any US president.
34 Warships (TBD)
Headline: ‘34 Warships sent from US for Obama visit‘
Article: Communications set-up and nuclear button and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi. He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea. Arrangements have been put in place for emergency evacuation, if needed.
(SHN Note): This from The Economic Times back in October, “There will be US naval ships, along with Indian vessels, patrolling the sea till about 330-km from the shore. This is to negate the possibility of a missile being fired from a distance,” the officer said.
UPDATE (11.05): Yesterday, Geoff Morrell, press secretary for the Pentagon (same government organization that paid $998,798 for two 19-cent washers) stated, ‘Obama will not be guarded by 34 ships.’ Geoff, not being a numbers kinda guy, would not comment on US Navy warships being accompanied by Indian vessels. And like Robert, uhh, Gibbs, refused to release the true figures of combined warships required to keep our dear leader safe.
Article: About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists would accompany the President. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.
Entire Taj Mahal Booked
Article: To ensure fool-proof security, the President’s team has booked the entire Taj Mahal Hotel, including 570 rooms, all banquets and restaurants. Since his security contingent and staff will comprise a huge number, 125 rooms at Taj President have also been booked, apart from 80 to 90 rooms each in Grand Hyatt and The Oberoi hotels. The NCPA, where the President is expected to meet representatives from the business community, has also been entirely booked.
Article: India is preparing for Barack Obama’s first visit to the country by removing coconuts from palm trees in Mumbai to protect the US president. All coconuts around the city’s Gandhi museum, one of Mr Obama’s stops in the city, are being taken down. “We told the authorities to remove the dry coconuts from trees near the building. Why take a chance?” Mani Bhavan’s executive secretary, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told the BBC. Mr Obama, still smarting from heavy losses in the midterm elections, will visit India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and China on the 10-day tour.
Bomb-Proof Tunnel Construction
Headline: ‘Tunnel for Obama near Mani Bhavan’
Article: On Monday, US secret agents visited the museum to plan Obama’s security detail. They were accompanied by officers of Mumbai Police and civic officials of the D ward (where Mani Bhavan is located). While inspecting the route and the buildings lining up the route to the museum, the Americans detected a skyscraper near Peddar road and also found the area to be highly populated. The tunnel would be a kilometre long and measure 12ft by 12ft — enough to let Obama’s cavalcade pass through. The tunnel would be centrally air-conditioned, fitted with close-circuit television cameras, and will be heavily guarded at every point, including, of course, its entry and exit.
$200 Million Per Day? (TBD)
Article: The US would be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs. 900 crore approx) per day on President Barack Obama’s visit to the city. “The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit,” a top official of the Maharashtra Government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.
UPDATE (10.04): White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is denying the, uh, $200 million cost… I repeat, Robert Gibbs is denying the cost… I repeat, Robert Gibbs. But Gibbs refuses to reveal the, uhhh, true cost of Obama’s extravagant family outing to us serfs. Good thing, too. This recession is enough to worry about.
19 Million Pounds of CO2
Article: Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club, wrote in January 2010 in the Huffington Post that President Barack Obama is “the greenest president ever.” Well … maybe not. We are constantly told how bad air travel is for the planet. For example, the UK has a whole organization, called “Plane Stupid,” dedicated to the issue. It is groups like this that enable us to calculate the carbon emissions of air travel using the handy dandy Terrapass web page.
Terrapass calculation methodology: HERE
Article (cont.): If one assumes that all 3,000 people fly commercial from Washington, D.C., to New Delhi and back (and nowhere else), their cumulative carbon footprint can be calculated according to Terrapass. So here’s what we get for the maximum number of people, ten, that we can select at one time on that website. Note that Bombay, India is now called Mumbai, but the airport code is still BOM in Terrapass: Multiply 62,238 lbs of CO2 for ten people times 300 (to make three thousand) and we get 18,671,400 lbs of CO2, or 8,469 metric tons.
SIGN-OFF: Let’s check in with the Sierra Club and see what they have to say about all of this… (cricket sound)
