The Mariel Boatlift Cuban Refugee Impact On Miami, Florida…
Miami homicide rate doubled that year. The city’s crime rate jumped by 89%. In 1978 Miami had 15 reported rapes, but 59 rapes were reported within 7 months following the Mariel Boatlift, with 90% of the persons arrested in those cases being Cuban refugees that also accounted for 48% of all Miami homicides.
The Mariel boatlift was a mass emigration of Cubans, who departed from Cuba’s Mariel Harbor for the United States between April 15 and October 31, 1980.
The exodus was organized by Cuban-Americans with the agreement of Cuban president Fidel Castro. The exodus started to have negative political implications for U.S. president Jimmy Carter when it was discovered that a number of the refugees had been released from Cuban jails and mental health facilities.
The Mariel Boatlift was a six-month drama in which more than 125,000 Cubans fled their country and overwhelmed the shores of the U.S. Castro, whose façade of popularity and support was badly shaken.
South Florida had to contend with the repercussions for years to come, including a marked increase in crime (which, among other things, influenced the plot for the 1983 remake of the hyper-violent movie classic Scarface.)
Cuban Refugees Enter Texas – 2016
Changing times in the Communist country haven’t stopped tens of thousands from fleeing the island and saying gimme shelter to American immigration officials at Texas land ports.
From October 2015 to February 2016, more than 18,500 Cubans arrived at Texas’ Laredo field office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which includes ports from Del Rio to Brownsville. If that trend continues, it will shatter last year’s numbers for the same ports, when a record 28,371 crossed. During the 2015 fiscal year, more than 43,150 arrived at the 20 CBP field offices in the United States that process immigrants. More than half — 25,800 — arrived in only the first five months of the current fiscal year.
“I’ve come to Havana to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people,” Obama said in a statement Monday.
Obama, Google Reach Out To Cuba
Executives from several technology companies are traveling with the U.S. president on his goodwill tour or introducing new business initiatives focused on the island—or both. Among the companies joining the Cuba parade this week are Google parent Alphabet Inc., Airbnb Inc., PayPal Holdings Inc., Priceline Group Inc., Stripe Inc., and Xerox Corp.
One main area of focus is money transfers. Lifting restrictions on moving money between the two countries was one of the first things the Obama administration sought to relax since relations began to warm. Dan Schulman, the chief executive officer of PayPal who’s traveling with Obama, said on Monday that his company would begin offering payments to and from Cubans this year through Xoom, an international money transfer company it acquired last year.
Americans send about $2 billion to Cubans each year, accounting for about 3 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, according to the U.S. State Department. That’s about a 10th of what Americans transfer to Mexicans, the largest recipients of remittances from the U.S. Fees from payments to Cubans could total as much as $147 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Obama Imports Muslim Refugees
President Obama’s open-door immigration policy is set to accept more immigrants from Muslim nations over the next five years than the entire population of Washington, D.C., according to federal documents.
Figures from the Department of Homeland Security show that the president has already issued 680,000 green cards to immigrants from Muslim nations over the past five years. Unless Congress changes his policy, that number will be repeated in the next five years.
What’s more, the president is also planning to add over 100,000 more with refugee status, many from Syria. Refugees can also petition the government for their relatives.
The subcommittee said that “assuming no change in visa policy, the U.S. can expect to give green cards to another 680,000 more migrants from these countries over the next five years. A green card entitles recipients to access federal benefits, lifetime residency, work authorization, and a direct route to becoming a U.S. citizen.”
That is a group bigger than Washington, D.C.’s population of 658,893.
Muslims Bomb Brussels – 2016
Paris bomber Salah Abdeslam, Belgium’s chief prosecutor revealed today.
Ibrahim El Bakraoui, who helped kill 14 people when he set off his suicide vest at Brussels airport yesterday, left the will in the bin of the terror cell’s Schaerbeek safehouse.
The typed note, found next to 15kg of homemade explosives, an AK-47 and an ISIS flag, said: ‘I don’t know what to do. I’m in a hurry. I’m on the run. People are looking for me everywhere. And if I give myself up then I’ll end up in a cell.’
Meanwhile, Brussels master bombmaker Najim Laachraoui – known as the ‘Man in White’ – is still on the run today after evading a series of special forces raids following the deadly attacks which killed 34 yesterday.
Belgium’s chief prosecutor this afternoon confirmed is ‘still at large’ after Belgian media reported the explosives expert was taken alive by a SWAT team inside a pizzeria in the Anderlecht suburb of the city.
The latest twist came after Belgian brothers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui were named as two of the ISIS suicide bombers – eight days after they escaped police in a gunfight – and it is now clear there is a mystery fourth suicide bomber.
Laachraoui is suspected of rigging up the suicide vests that helped kill 34 in twin attacks yesterday – and is believed to have done the same for the Paris terrorists who murdered 130 in November.
