Financial Crisis And Lack Of Jobs Forces Greece To Roundup Illegal Aliens
(Yahoo) Greece’s remote Evros region has turned into Europe’s main battleground against illegal immigration; more than two-thirds of people making the clandestine journey into the European Union pass through here from neighboring Turkey.
Greece launched an aggressive campaign this month to try to seal its 200-kilometer (130-mile) northeastern border, as it faces a debilitating financial crisis that has caused a swell in joblessness and a surge in racist attacks against immigrants with dark skin.
The police operation has brought nearly 2,000 additional border guards to the Turkish frontier previously manned by about 500 officers. They fanned out with dogs, night vision equipment and flat-bottomed boats for 24-hour patrols of the Evros River that forms a natural border. At least 21 people have drowned or died of exposure crossing the river this year, while several have been listed as missing.
In Athens, the operation is being bolstered by mass roundups of suspected illegal immigrants. They are seen lined up on the streets of the capital every day, many in handcuffs, waiting to be put in detention until they can be deported. In the first week of the crackdown in early August, police said they apprehended nearly 7,000 people for identification checks; nearly 1,700 were slated for deportation.
Anwar, a 22-year-old man from Bangladesh, walked across the border near Orestiada, a small town wedged between Turkey and Bulgaria. Unaware of the immigration clampdown, he said he is looking for police so he can turn himself in. It’s a well-worn ploy: Migrants have actively tried to get themselves taken to detention centers near Athens, assuming they will be released due to overcrowding and allowed to blend into the chaotic capital.
“I’ve come here to work,” Anwar, who declined to give his full name because of his illegal status, said moments after crossing the border. “I know what will happen to me: They might keep me in detention for around three months, but then they’ll let me out and I’ll go to Athens.”
Now, however, authorities are determined to swiftly deport illegal migrants they round up.

400,000+ File For Unemployment… Again
(AP) The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, a sign the job market isn’t getting much better.
Applications ticked down by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 404,000, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The four-week average declined for the third straight week to 408,000. That’s the lowest average in eight weeks.
Still, applications are higher than they would be in a healthy economy. They need to fall consistently below 375,000 to signal sustainable job growth. They haven’t been below that level since February.
The report suggests that layoffs have declined in recent weeks. But other data show hiring hasn’t picked up.
Ellen Zentner, senior economist at Nomura Securities, said applications around 400,000 indicate a neutral job market, “one that’s neither picking up, nor deteriorating.”
Only a few weeks ago some had feared the risks of another recession had grown. So “even neutral readings are good,” she said, because they signal that conditions aren’t worsening.

Feds Design Health Insurance For The Masses
(AP) The federal government is taking on a crucial new role in the nation’s health care, designing a basic benefits package for millions of privately insured Americans. A framework for the Obama administration was released Friday.
The report by independent experts from the Institute of Medicine lays out guidelines for deciding what to include in the new “essential benefits package,” and how to keep it affordable for small businesses and taxpayers, as well as scientifically up to date.
The advisers recommended that the package be built on mid-tier health plans currently offered by small employers, expanded to include certain services such as mental health, and squeezed into a budget. They did not spell out a list of services to cover, but they did say that treatments should be cost-effective.

Until now, designing benefits has been the job of insurers, employers and states. But the new health care law requires insurance companies to provide at least the federally approved package if they want to sell to small businesses, families and individuals through new state markets set to open in 2014.
Existing workplace plans won’t be required to adopt the federal model [Cha, right! – Sad Hill], but employers and consumer advocates alike predict it will become the nation’s benchmark for health insurance over time.
“The federal government has never before attempted to define what constitutes essential medical benefits for Americans with private insurance,” said Stephen Finan, a top policy expert for the American Cancer Society.
With the nation divided over President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law, and Republicans branding it as a government takeover, the administration reacted cautiously to the recommendations.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement that officials would hold “listening sessions” around the country before any final decisions are made, a process that could take months.
“Before we put forward a proposal, it is critical that we hear from the American people,” Sebelius said. The law would expand coverage to about 30 million uninsured people.
Actually, work on the benefits package is already well under way within the HHS department. And on the outside, a huge lobbying campaign to shape the final package is about to take off.

Employer groups – particularly those representing low-wage industries – want to keep benefits fairly basic. Since the government is going to be subsidizing coverage for millions of people, a generous plan will drive up costs for taxpayers, they argue. The health care law requires that essential benefits include outpatient, hospital, emergency, maternal, newborn and children’s care, prescription drugs, mental health and substance abuse treatment, rehabilitation, labs, prevention and wellness. But Congress gave the administration lots of leeway to determine the specifics.
In its 300-page report, the Institute of Medicine panel stressed that the package has to be affordable if Obama’s overhaul is going to stand the test of time.

Largest SouthEast Solar Farm All Set For Construction
(FLToday) What would be the Southeast’s largest solar power farm is set for construction in the Florida Panhandle.
Melbourne-based National Solar Power on Monday announced it would build the $1.5 billion solar array in Gadsden County, just west of Tallahassee.
The facility is expected to generate 400 megawatts — enough electricity to power 32,000 homes.
The project also is expected to provide jobs for 400 construction workers over five years and up to 120 permanent employees.
National Solar has an agreement to provide electricity to Progress Energy Florida, which serves parts of central and north Florida.

White House Jobs Plan Would Cost $200,000 Per Job
(Alphabet News) Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner didn’t dispute a Harvard economist’s estimate that each job in the White House’s jobs plan would cost $200,000, but said the pricetag is the wrong way to measure the bill’s worth.
And he also pointed out, in an interview today with ABC News’ David Muir, that there is no other option on the table for getting the economy moving and putting more people back to work.
“You’ve got to think about the costs of the alternatives,” Geithner said when asked about Harvard economist Martin Feldstein’s calculation that each job created by President Obama’s American Jobs Act would cost taxpayers about $200,000.
“If government does nothing, it does nothing now because they’re scared by politics or they want to debate what’s perfect, then there will be fewer Americans back to work, the economy will be weaker,” he said.
“We can borrow money for 10 years as the government of the United States because people have confidence in this country at less than 2 percent,” he said. “The responsible path now is to take advantage of the unique position we’re in as a country. People have a lot of confidence in us. Let’s take advantage of that now to do things that help growth in the short-term.”

Foreclosures Jump 33 Percent
(CBS) Banks have stepped up their actions against homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments, setting the stage for a fresh wave of foreclosures.
The number of U.S. homes that received an initial default notice – the first step in the foreclosure process – jumped 33 percent in August from July, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.
The increase represents a nine-month high and the biggest monthly gain in four years. The spike signals banks are starting to take swifter action against homeowners, nearly a year after processing issues led to a sharp slowdown in foreclosures.

Bad To Worse: Job Claims Spike
(CNBC and FOX) The number of people applying for unemployment benefits jumped last week to the highest level in three months. It’s a sign that the job market remains depressed.
The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications rose by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 428,000. The week included the Labor Day holiday.
Applications typically drop during short work weeks. In this case, applications didn’t drop as much as the department expected, so the seasonally adjusted value rose. A Labor spokesman said the total wasn’t affected by Hurricane Irene.
Hey! At least the White House is trying. Case in point, bankrupt companies like Obama-donating Solyndra were awarded $535 million we couldn’t use. Solyndra Not Sole Firm To Hit Rock Bottom Despite Stimulus Funding

All-Drama Obama wants to continue raising voters’ anxiety regardless of the effects on our economy simply to pressure Boehner and McConnell to give in to his demands.
Obama has only two goals: one is to increase the debt ceiling to a sufficient level that the issue won’t pop up again to damage him in the 2012 campaign, and the second is to increase taxes without making significant cuts in federal spending. He apparently regards the very real debt ceiling crisis as nothing more than a political tool.

ObamaNation: Florida Park To Become Tent City For The Homeless
(ForidaToday) An isolated county park in Mims could become the future site of a “tent city” to house some of Brevard County’s homeless population.
Brevard County Commission Chairman Robin Fisher and advocates for the homeless are pushing a plan to convert a section of Hatbill Park in Mims into a tent city for people without a permanent place to live, in a plan modeled after a site in Pinellas County.
The renewed push to find a legal alternative to homeless people illegally camping on private property was triggered by a recent Titusville Police Department initiative to clear out homeless camps in the city in advance of the last shuttle launch.
George Taylor Sr., an advocate for homeless veterans, has criticized police officials for how they handled the detail, including how he said they discarded items found at the camps, such as clothing, supplies and various personal mementos. Police defended the action, saying they gave residents of the camps repeated notice that they had to leave the camps, gave them a list of some community resources, and informed them of when their deadline was.

There are thousands of people in Brevard County who are homeless. The latest organized countywide census of homeless people, taken Jan. 27, found that 1,889 people in Brevard were sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation or in an emergency shelter, including 450 children. An additional 839 people fell into an expanded Florida Statutes definition of homelessness because they were living in a motel, camping ground, travel trailer park or someone else’s residence because of economic hardship or loss of their previous housing.
Liz Lee, director of community impact for the United Way of Brevard, said those numbers understate the true scope of the homeless problem in Brevard. Many homeless people hide, rather than be counted, either out of embarrassment or because of fear of legal repercussions. Others live in areas so isolated that people doing the census never find them.
Lee also expects the county’s homeless population to increase, because of the end of the space shuttle program and the related layoffs.
“A lot more people are unemployed for the first time in their lives and lost their homes,” Lee said. This includes former space workers and people in other jobs that are tied to business from the space program and its workers.
“They are going to be the new homeless,” Lee said.

(Times Online) Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has launched an unprecedented attack on President Obama’s plans to dismantle Nasa’s manned space exploration programme.
The world’s best-known astronaut, who has traditionally avoided controversy and rarely seeks the limelight despite his feat 41 years ago, warned that Mr Obama risks blasting American space superiority on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity”.
(MSNBC) Canceling Constellation could lead to thousands of layoffs at some of America’s biggest aerospace contractors, including Lockheed Martin, the Boeing Co. and ATK. Such job losses are among the factors behind congressional opposition to the cancellation. Armstrong and his fellow astronauts emphasize the bigger implications, however, and say in their letter that the decision would put the nation on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity.”
The letter notes that the U.S. space effort will be dependent for years to come on the Russians for transport to the International Space Station, at a cost of more than $50 million per seat.

UPDATE (07.25.2011): GE Moves X-Ray Headquarters To China
(WSJ) General Electric Co. said it is moving its X-ray business headquarters to China to accelerate sales in the country’s fast-growing health-care market, the latest sign of China’s growing importance to the giant U.S. conglomerate.
The X-ray unit will be the company’s first business to be based in China.
The business has already begun the move—which includes the unit’s chief executive and three other members of its executive team—and expects to complete the process by year end, said Anne LeGrand, vice president and general manager of GE Healthcare Global X-Ray.
