Welfare Debit Cards Used At Casinos And Strip Clubs
(Denver Post) Debit cards issued to provide assistance to welfare recipients were used to withdraw cash at ATMs in strip clubs, casinos, bingo halls and amusement parks, a 9News investigation found.
As a result, more than $1 million in welfare funds goes to ATM owners and banks through transaction fees every year.
“When you see the type of obvious abuses that you’ve shown, it says there are people on welfare that should not be,” said Jon Caldara of the conservative watchdog group Independence Institute.
The 9News investigation included the review of 222,000 transactions involving Colorado Quest cards, the state-issued debit cards welfare recipients use to access cash at ATMs. The transactions occurred during a six-month period in 2011 involving a total of $8.1 million in ATM withdrawals.
While state law bans welfare transactions at liquor stores, casinos and bingo halls, it does not at strip clubs.
But the 9News investigation found numerous examples of cash withdrawals at businesses where transactions are banned — and numerous examples of high ATM fees ultimately paid by the state even where transactions are allowed.
For example, 9News calculated that more than $40,000 was withdrawn from ATMs in metro-area liquor stores between May 1 and Nov. 30.
“I think it’s wrong,” said Steve Ziporlin, who works at a grocery store near Josh Liquor. “The money is supposed to be used for groceries and sundries.”
9News found numerous transactions at ATMs in casinos in Black Hawk.
“The state is giving them money, and to come up here and play with it, I think that’s defeated them and their families,” Pat Schmidt said as she left a casino. “It comes out of our pocket.”
The 9News investigation also found transactions at Elitch Gardens, at Disneyland and Universal Studios in California, at a liquor store in Los Angeles, and at ATMs along the Las Vegas strip.
At strip clubs, where transactions are not banned by state law, 9News found numerous transactions, including 14 at Shotgun Willie’s in Glendale for a combined amount of $1,500.
Taxpayers also covered the $6.50 ATM fee for each withdrawal.
Out of the 222,000 transactions reviewed by 9News, 80 percent occurred at ATMs that applied a fee to accounts, resulting in about $540,000 in fees.
[...] ”Annual maintenance on such a machine will be $12,000 to $15,000 per year. That’s a lot of money that you have to recover,” said Don Childears, president of the Colorado Bankers Association.

ObamaNation: Florida Park To Become Tent City For The Homeless
(ForidaToday) An isolated county park in Mims could become the future site of a “tent city” to house some of Brevard County’s homeless population.
Brevard County Commission Chairman Robin Fisher and advocates for the homeless are pushing a plan to convert a section of Hatbill Park in Mims into a tent city for people without a permanent place to live, in a plan modeled after a site in Pinellas County.
The renewed push to find a legal alternative to homeless people illegally camping on private property was triggered by a recent Titusville Police Department initiative to clear out homeless camps in the city in advance of the last shuttle launch.
George Taylor Sr., an advocate for homeless veterans, has criticized police officials for how they handled the detail, including how he said they discarded items found at the camps, such as clothing, supplies and various personal mementos. Police defended the action, saying they gave residents of the camps repeated notice that they had to leave the camps, gave them a list of some community resources, and informed them of when their deadline was.

There are thousands of people in Brevard County who are homeless. The latest organized countywide census of homeless people, taken Jan. 27, found that 1,889 people in Brevard were sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation or in an emergency shelter, including 450 children. An additional 839 people fell into an expanded Florida Statutes definition of homelessness because they were living in a motel, camping ground, travel trailer park or someone else’s residence because of economic hardship or loss of their previous housing.
Liz Lee, director of community impact for the United Way of Brevard, said those numbers understate the true scope of the homeless problem in Brevard. Many homeless people hide, rather than be counted, either out of embarrassment or because of fear of legal repercussions. Others live in areas so isolated that people doing the census never find them.
Lee also expects the county’s homeless population to increase, because of the end of the space shuttle program and the related layoffs.
“A lot more people are unemployed for the first time in their lives and lost their homes,” Lee said. This includes former space workers and people in other jobs that are tied to business from the space program and its workers.
“They are going to be the new homeless,” Lee said.

(Times Online) Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has launched an unprecedented attack on President Obama’s plans to dismantle Nasa’s manned space exploration programme.
The world’s best-known astronaut, who has traditionally avoided controversy and rarely seeks the limelight despite his feat 41 years ago, warned that Mr Obama risks blasting American space superiority on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity”.
(MSNBC) Canceling Constellation could lead to thousands of layoffs at some of America’s biggest aerospace contractors, including Lockheed Martin, the Boeing Co. and ATK. Such job losses are among the factors behind congressional opposition to the cancellation. Armstrong and his fellow astronauts emphasize the bigger implications, however, and say in their letter that the decision would put the nation on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity.”
The letter notes that the U.S. space effort will be dependent for years to come on the Russians for transport to the International Space Station, at a cost of more than $50 million per seat.
The good news is, Obama’s NASA Administrator can finally get on with their ‘foremost mission‘ – to ensure that members of the Muslim world ‘feel good about their historic contribution to science‘.
UPDATE (07.25.2011): GE Moves X-Ray Headquarters To China
(WSJ) General Electric Co. said it is moving its X-ray business headquarters to China to accelerate sales in the country’s fast-growing health-care market, the latest sign of China’s growing importance to the giant U.S. conglomerate.
The X-ray unit will be the company’s first business to be based in China.
The business has already begun the move—which includes the unit’s chief executive and three other members of its executive team—and expects to complete the process by year end, said Anne LeGrand, vice president and general manager of GE Healthcare Global X-Ray.

With the ‘recession ending back in 2009‘ thanks to 1.9 million fewer jobs and the Fed’s failure to secretly bail out GE, Harley-Davidson, Verizon, Toyota, Tesla Motors and foreign banks, it’s high time Obama spent our hard-earned money on a little something for himself:
(Washington Times) President Obama now claims there’s only $2 billion he can cut out of this year’s $3.6 trillion in federal outlays. He’s not looking very hard. The administration’s trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending spree spread millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars around places like the president’s boyhood home, Indonesia. Money that stayed within the country often wound up in the hands of debt-riddled, fly-by-night firms. This week, the White House continued to stonewall attempts to get to the bottom of where our money has been going.
On Friday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee delivered a subpoena to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) ordering the disclosure of documents related to the $535 million loan guarantee the Department of Energy gave to Solyndra Inc. This firm has been dear to Democratic luminaries, from Energy Secretary Stephen Chu to the president himself. “The true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra,” Mr. Obama said during a May 2010 visit.
No strangers to ‘Obama economic growth‘ here in the United States, the latest ‘success’ story comes from just across the pond:
The loan was meant to prop up a plant that would produce solar panels, ensuring the country would become more “green.” Instead, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show Solyndra’s books are nothing but red. The outfit lost $518,694,000 between 2007 and 2010 despite the massive infusion of public cash and private venture capital. OMB refused to disclose any documents that would shed light on why the government approved loans to this particular company.
The firm’s private investors include major donors to the Democratic Party, as do other recipients of the $11 billion Department of Energy slush fund used to dole out cash to so-called “clean technologies.” Absent these massive subsidies, the solar power industry would be about as large as the sundial manufacturing industry. Nonetheless, the Obama administration is desperate to paint intermittent energy sources as “the future.” It has no qualms about pouring billions in other people’s money into any product bearing the “green” label, even if that means handing over sacks of cash to foreigners.

(CNN) The head of General Electric told a jobs summit at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Monday that businesses needed to take the lead on job creation.
At a conference where many of the comments were focused on government barriers to hiring, GE (GE, Fortune 500) Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt acknowledged there needed to be some policy changes by Congress and the Obama administration. But he said that the responsibility for hiring lay with businesses.
“The people who are part of the business sector, the people in this room, have got to stop complaining about government and get some action underway,” he told the group. “There’s no excuse today for lack of leadership. The truth is we all need to be part of the solution.”
Immelt is the chair of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. He said the group has made a number of recommendations for changes in government policies that should be able to help job creation, such as the executive order announced Monday asking independent agencies to rid their books of old and outdated regulations.
Immelt said he is committed to working with Obama on other moves that can help hiring, and that he expects to have proposals by the end of the year that should help to create up to 1 million jobs.
But he said that it’s important that businesses take action — like taking some risks, and thinking about bringing back jobs that had been moved overseas.

[Immelt] said that arguing between business groups and the government isn’t in the best interest of the nation’s economy.
“We can’t always be fighting. We need to act, and the private sector can do more,” he said.
The Chamber’s jobs summit came in the wake of a disappointing government jobs report that showed hiring ground to a near halt in June. Immelt and other speakers referred to the report as a sign of the serious problems facing the labor market.
“We have a lot of work to do,” he said.
