Chimp-Stimulus Cartoon Raises Racism Concerns

(NYTimes) Updated, Feb. 19 2009 | The New York Post issued an apology on Thursday night “to those who were offended,” while maintaining that the cartoon was not intended to be racist.

Original Post | Gov. David A. Paterson, Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, the Rev. Al Sharpton and others expressed concern on Wednesday morning over an editorial cartoon in The New York Post that showed a police officer telling his colleague who just shot a chimpanzee, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Critics said the cartoon, drawn by Sean Delonas, implicitly compared President Obama with the primate and evoked a history of racist imagery of blacks. The chimpanzee was an apparent reference to the 200-pound pet chimpanzee that was shot dead by a police officer in Stamford, Conn., on Monday evening, after it mauled a friend of his owner.

Speaking at a conference of the New York Academy of Medicine on Wednesday morning, Mr. Paterson said that while he had not seen the cartoon, he believed that The Post should explain it. Given the possibility that some people could conclude the cartoon had a racial subtext, Mr. Paterson said the newspaper needed to clarify its meaning.

“It would be very important for The New York Post to explain what the cartoon was intended to portray,” Mr. Paterson said in response to a question about whether the cartoon’s depiction of a monkey was racist, as Mr. Sharpton has suggested. “Obviously those types of associations have been made. They do feed a kind of negative and stereotypical way that people think. But I think if it’s enough that people are raising this issue, I hope they would clarify.”

Senator Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, said in a statement:

“I found the Post cartoon offensive and purposefully hurtful. This type of cartoon serves no productive role in the public discourse.”

Consider this, our Federal Government is heralding its record number of food stamp distribution. Meanwhile their Park Service department pleads “Do NOT feed the animals” because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and not take care of themselves.

And yes, I realize this story somewhat pales in comparison to California’s welfare recipients spending $69 million around the globe in places like Hawaii, Guam, Miami…

Welfare Debit Cards Used At Casinos And Strip Clubs

(Denver Post) Debit cards issued to provide assistance to welfare recipients were used to withdraw cash at ATMs in strip clubs, casinos, bingo halls and amusement parks, a 9News investigation found.

As a result, more than $1 million in welfare funds goes to ATM owners and banks through transaction fees every year.

“When you see the type of obvious abuses that you’ve shown, it says there are people on welfare that should not be,” said Jon Caldara of the conservative watchdog group Independence Institute.

The 9News investigation included the review of 222,000 transactions involving Colorado Quest cards, the state-issued debit cards welfare recipients use to access cash at ATMs. The transactions occurred during a six-month period in 2011 involving a total of $8.1 million in ATM withdrawals.

While state law bans welfare transactions at liquor stores, casinos and bingo halls, it does not at strip clubs.

But the 9News investigation found numerous examples of cash withdrawals at businesses where transactions are banned — and numerous examples of high ATM fees ultimately paid by the state even where transactions are allowed.

For example, 9News calculated that more than $40,000 was withdrawn from ATMs in metro-area liquor stores between May 1 and Nov. 30.

“I think it’s wrong,” said Steve Ziporlin, who works at a grocery store near Josh Liquor. “The money is supposed to be used for groceries and sundries.”

9News found numerous transactions at ATMs in casinos in Black Hawk.

“The state is giving them money, and to come up here and play with it, I think that’s defeated them and their families,” Pat Schmidt said as she left a casino. “It comes out of our pocket.”

The 9News investigation also found transactions at Elitch Gardens, at Disneyland and Universal Studios in California, at a liquor store in Los Angeles, and at ATMs along the Las Vegas strip.

At strip clubs, where transactions are not banned by state law, 9News found numerous transactions, including 14 at Shotgun Willie’s in Glendale for a combined amount of $1,500.

Taxpayers also covered the $6.50 ATM fee for each withdrawal.

Out of the 222,000 transactions reviewed by 9News, 80 percent occurred at ATMs that applied a fee to accounts, resulting in about $540,000 in fees.

[...] ”Annual maintenance on such a machine will be $12,000 to $15,000 per year. That’s a lot of money that you have to recover,” said Don Childears, president of the Colorado Bankers Association.

Sure, Obama is sending $ millions of our hard-earned tax dollars to ‘stimulate’ Indonesia (his boyhood home) while spending $ billions on Illegal wars and the Soros’ Brazilian land & sea oil adventure, not to mention funding the Taliban — all unchecked. Yet when combined, their tally falls short of matching the $ trillions used to ‘secretly’ bail out foreign banks, foreign industries and overseas job outsourcing GE.

ObamaNation: Florida Park To Become Tent City For The Homeless

(ForidaToday) An isolated county park in Mims could become the future site of a “tent city” to house some of Brevard County’s homeless population.

Brevard County Commission Chairman Robin Fisher and advocates for the homeless are pushing a plan to convert a section of Hatbill Park in Mims into a tent city for people without a permanent place to live, in a plan modeled after a site in Pinellas County.

The renewed push to find a legal alternative to homeless people illegally camping on private property was triggered by a recent Titusville Police Department initiative to clear out homeless camps in the city in advance of the last shuttle launch.

George Taylor Sr., an advocate for homeless veterans, has criticized police officials for how they handled the detail, including how he said they discarded items found at the camps, such as clothing, supplies and various personal mementos. Police defended the action, saying they gave residents of the camps repeated notice that they had to leave the camps, gave them a list of some community resources, and informed them of when their deadline was.

~snip~

There are thousands of people in Brevard County who are homeless. The latest organized countywide census of homeless people, taken Jan. 27, found that 1,889 people in Brevard were sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation or in an emergency shelter, including 450 children. An additional 839 people fell into an expanded Florida Statutes definition of homelessness because they were living in a motel, camping ground, travel trailer park or someone else’s residence because of economic hardship or loss of their previous housing.

Liz Lee, director of community impact for the United Way of Brevard, said those numbers understate the true scope of the homeless problem in Brevard. Many homeless people hide, rather than be counted, either out of embarrassment or because of fear of legal repercussions. Others live in areas so isolated that people doing the census never find them.

Lee also expects the county’s homeless population to increase, because of the end of the space shuttle program and the related layoffs.

“A lot more people are unemployed for the first time in their lives and lost their homes,” Lee said. This includes former space workers and people in other jobs that are tied to business from the space program and its workers.

“They are going to be the new homeless,” Lee said.

Neil Armstrong Blasts Obama In April 2010

(Times Online) Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has launched an unprecedented attack on President Obama’s plans to dismantle Nasa’s manned space exploration programme.

The world’s best-known astronaut, who has traditionally avoided controversy and rarely seeks the limelight despite his feat 41 years ago, warned that Mr Obama risks blasting American space superiority on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity”.

(MSNBC) Canceling Constellation could lead to thousands of layoffs at some of America’s biggest aerospace contractors, including Lockheed Martin, the Boeing Co. and ATK. Such job losses are among the factors behind congressional opposition to the cancellation. Armstrong and his fellow astronauts emphasize the bigger implications, however, and say in their letter that the decision would put the nation on a “long downhill slide to mediocrity.”

The letter notes that the U.S. space effort will be dependent for years to come on the Russians for transport to the International Space Station, at a cost of more than $50 million per seat.

The good news is, Obama’s NASA Administrator  can finally get on with their ‘foremost mission‘ – to ensure that members of the Muslim world ‘feel good about their historic contribution to science‘.

With the ‘recession ending back in 2009‘ thanks to 1.9 million fewer jobs and the Fed’s failure to secretly bail out GE, Harley-Davidson, Verizon, Toyota, Tesla Motors and foreign banks, it’s high time Obama spent our hard-earned money on a little something for himself:

(Washington TimesPresident Obama now claims there’s only $2 billion he can cut out of this year’s $3.6 trillion in federal outlays. He’s not looking very hard. The administration’s trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending spree spread millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars around places like the president’s boyhood home, Indonesia. Money that stayed within the country often wound up in the hands of debt-riddled, fly-by-night firms. This week, the White House continued to stonewall attempts to get to the bottom of where our money has been going.

On Friday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee delivered a subpoena to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) ordering the disclosure of documents related to the $535 million loan guarantee the Department of Energy gave to Solyndra Inc. This firm has been dear to Democratic luminaries, from Energy Secretary Stephen Chu to the president himself. “The true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra,” Mr. Obama said during a May 2010 visit.

No strangers to ‘Obama economic growth‘ here in the United States, the latest ‘success’ story comes from just across the pond:

The loan was meant to prop up a plant that would produce solar panels, ensuring the country would become more “green.” Instead, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show Solyndra’s books are nothing but red. The outfit lost $518,694,000 between 2007 and 2010 despite the massive infusion of public cash and private venture capital. OMB refused to disclose any documents that would shed light on why the government approved loans to this particular company.

The firm’s private investors include major donors to the Democratic Party, as do other recipients of the $11 billion Department of Energy slush fund used to dole out cash to so-called “clean technologies.” Absent these massive subsidies, the solar power industry would be about as large as the sundial manufacturing industry. Nonetheless, the Obama administration is desperate to paint intermittent energy sources as “the future.” It has no qualms about pouring billions in other people’s money into any product bearing the “green” label, even if that means handing over sacks of cash to foreigners.

Via CNN, of course:

(CNN) The head of General Electric told a jobs summit at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Monday that businesses needed to take the lead on job creation.

At a conference where many of the comments were focused on government barriers to hiring, GE (GE, Fortune 500) Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt acknowledged there needed to be some policy changes by Congress and the Obama administration. But he said that the responsibility for hiring lay with businesses.

The people who are part of the business sector, the people in this room, have got to stop complaining about government and get some action underway,” he told the group. “There’s no excuse today for lack of leadership. The truth is we all need to be part of the solution.”

Immelt is the chair of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. He said the group has made a number of recommendations for changes in government policies that should be able to help job creation, such as the executive order announced Monday asking independent agencies to rid their books of old and outdated regulations.

Immelt said he is committed to working with Obama on other moves that can help hiring, and that he expects to have proposals by the end of the year that should help to create up to 1 million jobs.

But he said that it’s important that businesses take action — like taking some risks, and thinking about bringing back jobs that had been moved overseas.

~snip~

[Immelt] said that arguing between business groups and the government isn’t in the best interest of the nation’s economy.

“We can’t always be fighting. We need to act, and the private sector can do more,” he said.

The Chamber’s jobs summit came in the wake of a disappointing government jobs report that showed hiring ground to a near halt in June. Immelt and other speakers referred to the report as a sign of the serious problems facing the labor market.

“We have a lot of work to do,” he said.

obama humpty dumpty wait til they see the mess i make sat on the wall barack hussein sad hill news

Back in 2009 the Obama Administration predicted unemployment would rise to 9 percent by 2010 if Congress did not pass the do-or-die $787 billion stimulus bill. And while insisting that ‘only government’ could save the country from a recession President Obama promised that his life-saving stimulus would ‘create or save’ 3.5 million jobs.

That said, even if the figures below are correct – and they’re not – Humpty ain’t the only one sitting on a ledge.

1.9 Million Fewer Jobs Today Since ‘Recession Ended In 2009′

(CNS NewsTwenty-eight months after Congress passed President Obama’s signature economic stimulus law, and nearly one year after he declared the summer of 2010 to be “Recovery Summer,” 1.9 million fewer people are employed.

In February 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that 141.7 million people were employed. By the end of May 2011 – the last month for which data are available – that number had fallen to 139.8 million, a difference of 1.9 million.

While the number of people with jobs has increased slightly from its low point during the recession – 137.9 million in December 2009 – those 1.9 million jobs have been lost despite $800 billion in stimulus spending.

[The economy] is not creating jobs fast enough to keep up with a combination of layoffs and people entering the job market for the first time.

Former White House chief economist Larry Summers notes, ‘If the trend continues the economy will suffer further in the future as college graduates delay entry into the labor force, reducing their lifetime productivity.’

“Beyond the lack of jobs and incomes, an economy producing below its potential for a prolonged interval sacrifices its future,” argued Summers. “Huge numbers of new college graduates are moving back in with their parents this month because they have no job or means of support.”

As both Summers and the BLS data make clear, the economy is not creating new jobs fast enough to make up for layoffs and new graduates, calling into question Obama’s oft-repeated claim that the economy is recovering and creating jobs.

In fact, by citing figures from the first quarter of 2006, Summers is understating the economy’s poor performance. According to BLS data, the number of people with jobs peaked at 146.6 million in November 2007, meaning that over the entire recession – which officially began in December 2007 – the number of people employed has fallen by 6.8 million.

~snip~

On that note, let’s have a closer look at 3 current real-world examples of big government’s phony accounting practices:

#1: True Cost Of Fannie, Freddie Bailout $317 Billion – NOT $130 Billion

(CNS NewsThe Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says the real cost of the federal government guaranteeing the business of failed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is $317 billion — not the $130 billion normally claimed by the Obama administration.

In a report delivered to the House Budget Committee on June 2, the CBO said a “fair value” accounting of guaranteeing the two defunct mortgage companies – known as Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) – was more than twice as high as the Office of Management and Budget had accounted for.

#2: US Stimulus (QE2) A Disaster

(Zero HedgeTwo and a half years ago, Christina Romer, then still employed by the Obama administration in the position of Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers penned “The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan” – a report predicting the impact of a fiscal “stimulus” that took out $787 billion from the pocket of American Taxpayers (subsequently discovered to cost even more) and put that money…somewhere. We are not sure where, because according to a chart now made legendary for its complete failure to predict the future, it sure did not go into creating jobs.

Below we present the original chart that made the January 10, 2009 presentation, and superimpose upon it the reality of the past two and a half years. It is simply stunning. And while we are here, and discussing the abysmal failure of QE2 (the impending arrival of QE3 notwithstanding), it is amusing to hear the whimpering of the likes of one Richard Koo, who is now claiming that all along the money from the Fed’s monetary stimulus should have been invested in the form of a fiscal one. Well, Dick, [the chart] also includes the impact of $2 trillion in incremental monetary stimulus. Combined, both fiscal and monetary stimulus has now missed the worst case projection for US unemployment for 30 months running.

unemployment rate with and without the recovery plan sad hill news-Edit

Here is the simple truth: both monetary and fiscal stimuli are abysmal failures, when the economy is mean reverting to a state where it was hijacked from courtesy of 30 years of “great moderation” – and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Correction: there is one thing – the Fed can destroy the dollar in its attempt to disprove simple physics. And, ultimately, it will.

#3. Obama’s Phony Accounting On Auto Industry Bailout

(Washington Post) With some of the economic indicators looking a bit dicey, President Obama traveled to Ohio last week to tout what the administration considers a good-news story: the rescue of the domestic automobile industry. In fact, he also made it the subject of his weekly radio address.

We take no view on whether the administration’s efforts on behalf of the automobile industry were a good or bad thing; that’s a matter for the editorial pages and eventually the historians. But we are interested in the facts the president cited to make his case.

What we found is one of the most misleading collections of assertions we have seen in a short presidential speech. Virtually every claim by the president regarding the auto industry needs an asterisk, just like the fine print in that too-good-to-be-true car loan.

Let’s look at the claims in the order in which the president said them.

“Chrysler has repaid every dime and more of what it owes American taxpayers for their support during my presidency — and it repaid that money six years ahead of schedule.  And this week, we reached a deal to sell our remaining stake. That means soon, Chrysler will be 100 percent in private hands.”

Wow, “every dime and more” sounds like such a bargain. Not only did Chrysler pay back the loan, with interest — but the company paid back even more than they owed. Isn’t America great or what?

Not so fast. The president snuck in the weasel words “during my presidency” in his statement. What does that mean?

According to the White House, Obama is counting only the $8.5 billion loan that he made to Chrysler, not the $4 billion that President George W. Bush extended in his last month in office. However, Obama was not a disinterested observer at the time. According to The Washington Post article on the Bush loan, the incoming president called Bush’s action a “necessary step . . . to help avoid a collapse of our auto industry that would have had devastating consequences for our economy and our workers.”

Under the administration’s math, the U.S. government will receive $11.2 billion back from Chrysler, far more than the $8.5 billion Obama extended.

Through this sleight-of-hand accounting, the White House can conveniently ignore Bush’s loan, but even the Treasury Department admits that U.S. taxpayers will not recoup about $1.3 billion of the entire $12.5 billion investment when all is said and done.

It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for “months to years … and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned … I’m sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act your staff briefed you on many of these challenges.” At this point, Obama smiled and interjected, “Shovel-ready was not as … uh .. shovel-ready as we expected.” The Council, led by GE’s Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter.
