Bankrupt Bailed-Out GM Commits Over Half $ Billion For Logo Placement On British Soccer Team Jersey
(Reuters) Manchester United Ltd.’s deal with General Motors Co. to sponsor the hugely popular football club’s shirts will bring in 357 million pounds ($559 million) over the agreement’s seven-year term, the club said in a regulatory filing Friday.
Terms were first reported by Reuters on July 30.
The disclosure of the record-breaking deal, which will put GM’s Chevrolet brand name on the football team’s famous red jerseys, came as Manchester United supporters called for a boycott of sponsors’ products to pressure the club’s American owners to shelve a plan to float the club’s stock.
Manchester United Supporters Trust, which has 180,000 members, has fought a high-profile campaign against the American Glazer family, which plans to list United on the New York Stock Exchange this month.
The agreement with GM starts in the 2014-2015 season, but the club will start to reap some financial benefits as soon as this year, Friday’s filing said.
GM will pay fees of $18.6 million in this year’s and next year’s season, it said, before paying $70 million in the 2014-2105 season. GM’s payments will rise 2.1 percent each season thereafter, through the 2020-2021 season, it said.
U.S. automaker’s global marketing chief was ousted in connection with a deal with the popular English football club.
GM’s payments are more than double the current fee paid by insurance broker Aon.

It’s just another one of those hundred million dollar taxpayer-funded Obama stillborn ‘green‘ projects.
And Fisker’s unicorn-powered, rainbow-emitting, ‘free’ energy hybrid vehicle – slapped together at a defunct GM manufacturing plant – is a rather expensive version of Chevy’s exploding Volt.
‘But Sad Hill, the Chevy Volt costs taxpayers $250,000+ per vehicle to build!’
Yes it did. And the Volt is costing taxpayers much, much more per vehicle now that production has ceased with only a few thousand Volts ever being sold. Even so, with $500+ million in Obama money, Fisker has delivered fewer than 300 do-nothing machines to Amerika. As it stands, we’re looking at a cost of roughly $1.7 million per vehicle, and that’s if all of the existing units are sold.

Job-Killing Fisker Karma Plug-In Hybrid Dies During Consumer Reports Test
(Yahoo) Our Fisker Karma cost us $107,850. It is super sleek, high-tech—and now it’s broken.
We have owned our car for just a few days; it has less than 200 miles on its odometer. While doing speedometer calibration runs on our test track (a procedure we do for every test car before putting it in service by driving the car at a constant 65 mph between two measured points), the dashboard flashed a message and sounded a “bing“ showing a major fault. Our technician got the car off the track and put it into Park to go through the owner’s manual to interpret the warning. At that point, the transmission went into Neutral and wouldn’t engage any gear through its electronic shifter except Park and Neutral.
We let the car sit for about an hour and restarted it. We could now engage Drive and the same error message disappeared. After moving it only a few feet the error message reappeared and when we tried to engage Reverse the transmission went straight to Park and again no motion gear could be engaged. After calling the dealer, which is about 100 miles away, they promptly sent a flatbed tow truck to haul away the disabled Fisker.
We buy about 80 cars a year and this is the first time in memory that we have had a car that is undriveable before it has finished our check-in process.

Fisker Layoffs
(NLPC) Among the objections about taxpayer subsidies for the high-profile Chevy Volt, manufactured by Government Motors, is that the many grants, loans and tax breaks that lowered the sticker price on the electric hybrid car facilitated its (paltry) sales for the benefit of wealthier individuals who were purchasing it – those with average annual salaries of $170,000. So can you imagine how happy the affluent customers (like Leonardo DiCaprio) of the heavily subsidized, $102,000 electric Fisker Karma are, to be able to purchase their gimmicky sports sedan at a discount, with a $7,500 tax credit to boot?
Undoubtedly they are much happier than the 65 poor souls that Fisker just laid off. Will there be more?
Passing it off as “a bump in the road,” company spokesman Roger Ormisher chalked up the cutbacks to the difficulty in starting a new car company and what would appear to be trivial missed deadlines and sales targets. But Fisker, already the recipient of $193 million of a total $529 million loan from the Department of Energy – not to mention a reported $850 million in private investment – shows disconcerting signs of incompetence and poor stewardship with the resources it’s been trusted with.
So far the $193 million has been allocated mostly for the production of the Karma – therefore it can be deduced that taxpayers have subsidized a six-figure status symbol for the wealthy. The car serves no practical purpose, but instead provides “wow-factor” fodder for discussion at cocktail parties. According to Fisker, the company had 650 people toiling away at its headquarters in California (before 40 or so were laid off), plus another 125 that were refurbishing a former General Motors plant in Delaware (where 26 were laid off).
Something seems askew with the numbers, however. Fisker has said “not a single dollar of the DOE loans has been, or will be, spent outside of America” – an assurance that PriceWaterhouseCoopers is allegedly tracking for DOE. But the Karma is assembled at Valmet Automotive in Finland, so if the $193 million has been mostly spent on that project (as Fisker said in an official statement put out on Monday), how could at least a significant portion of that money not have been spent overseas? And if it wasn’t, then the evidence looks even worse. Consider:
· $193 million divided by 775 U.S. jobs equals about $250,000 per job that American taxpayers have paid to subsidize Fisker to design and engineer its luxury electric hybrid
· Fisker laid off 26 of the alleged 125 employees working at the Delaware plant, but activity there has been “halted” – so are the other 99 being paid to do nothing?
· DOE is reportedly withholding the remaining payout of the loan because Fisker “missed milestones” in getting the Karma to market – approximately three months later than scheduled. Is tardiness of 90 days seriously the only reason DOE is reluctant to issue more money to Fisker?
· The layoffs and Delaware stoppage are allegedly for Fisker to “conserve cash” as it tries to renegotiate with DOE the terms of the remaining $336 million of its loan. If reports are true, then Fisker has had $1.05 billion at its disposal (private, DOE and Delaware funding) to get the Karma designed and launched and prepare for its next car, “Project Nina,” the planned $50,000 family sedan. Where is the money going?
The troubling news doesn’t stop with Fisker. In December its battery supplier, A123 Systems, was forced to lay off 125 of its own employees at its plants in Michigan due to Fisker’s production delays last year. In addition to its vendor relationship, A123 is also an investor in Fisker according to its SEC filings, having poured $20.5 million in cash and stock equity into the company.

Obama-GM Blame Low Chevy Volt Sales And 1300 Employee Layoffs On Sad Hill News
(Washington Examiner) General Motors Co. announced the temporary suspension of Chevrolet Volt production and the layoffs of 1300 employees, as the company is cutting Volt manufacturing to meet lower-than-expected demand for the electric cars.
“Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand,” GM spokesman Chris Lee said. The car company had hoped to sell 45,000 Chevy Volts in America this year, according to the Detrot News, but has only sold about 1,626 over the first two months of 2012.
“GM blamed the lack of sales in January on “exaggerated” media reports and the federal government’s investigation into Volt batteries catching fire, which officially began in November and ended Jan. 21,” the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News reported.

Sure, America was just getting used to the financial floggings that forced us to pay $7,500 for every fire-starting Chevy Volt sold. But with sales as low as 281 units per month, ObamaGenius buried – that’s right, I said ‘buried‘ – in his 2013 budget the increase to $10,000 per Chevy Volt purchased.
Obama Hikes Subsidy To Wealthy Electric Car Buyers
(Daily Caller) The White House intends to boost government subsidies for wealthy buyers of the Chevy Volt and other new-technology vehicles — to $10,000 per buyer.
That mammoth subsidy would cost taxpayers $100 million each year if it is approved by Congress, presuming only 10,000 new-technology autos are sold each year.
But the administration wants to get 1 million new-tech autos on the road by 2015. The subsidy cost of that goal could reach $10 billion.
The planned giveaway will likely prompt populist protests from GOP legislators, but it will likely also will be welcomed by auto-industry workers in the critical swing state of Michigan.
That welcome is critical for President Barack Obama, who is touting his support for blue-collar manufacturing programs to help offset his low public approval ratings.
The new subsidy level represents a 33 percent jump from the current $7,500 government payout for each Volt buyer, even though the Volt’s buyers are already among the wealthiest Americans. It will be offered to buyers of any new-technology autos, including battery-powered autos and cars powered by natural gas, said a White House official.
The extra money for wealthy buyers will be borrowed funds, eventually paid off by future taxpayers in all income brackets.

The extra subsidy is buried in President Barack Obama’s request for the 2013 budget, but was briefly described by White House economic chief Gene Sperling during a White House briefing today.
“We give consumers the incentive to buy these cars, he said, adding that the credit would be $10,000 per auto.
The budget document, titled “Investing in Our Future,” includes a goal of putting “One Million Advanced Technology Vehicles on the Road by 2015.”
To reach this goal, the budget “continues to support electric vehicle manufacturing and adoption in the United States through new consumer rebates, investments in R&D, and competitive programs to encourage investment in advanced vehicle infrastructure,” says the document.

God Of ‘Green Energy’ Bestows $118 Million In Taxpayer Funds Upon Another Bankrupt ‘Green Energy’ Firm
(Fox) The parent company of an electric car battery maker that received a $118 million grant from the Obama administration filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday.
New York-based Ener1 said it has been affected by competition from China and other countries.
Ener1 subsidiary EnerDel received a $118 million stimulus grant from the Energy Department in 2009, and Vice President Joe Biden visited the company’s new battery plant in Indiana last year.
Ener1 is the third company to seek bankruptcy protection after receiving assistance from the Energy Department under the economic stimulus law. California solar panel maker Solyndra Inc. and Beacon Power, a Massachusetts energy-storage firm, declared bankruptcy last year. Solyndra received a $528 million federal loan, while Beacon Power got a $43 million loan guarantee.
Solyndra, of Fremont, Calif., was the first renewable-energy company to receive a loan guarantee under the 2009 stimulus law, and the Obama administration frequently touted it as a model for its clean energy program.
Since then, the company’s implosion and revelations that the administration hurried a review of the loan in time for a 2009 groundbreaking has become an embarrassment for President Barack Obama and a rallying cry for GOP critics of the administration’s green energy program.
The chairman of a House subcommittee that is investigating Solyndra said the latest bankruptcy showed that the administration’s clean energy program has failed.
“Unfortunately, you can now add Ener1 to the growing list of failed companies that went belly up after hundreds of millions of dollars in administration backing,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla.
“One bankruptcy may be a fluke, two could be coincidence, but three is a trend,” Stearns said. “Our investigation continues, and we are working to ensure taxpayers are never again stuck paying hundreds of millions of dollars because of the administration’s risky bets.”

The God Of ‘Green Energy’ Promises More Taxpayer Funds For ‘Green Energy’
(Denver Post) In his speech at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora on Thursday, Obama repeated the goal he set in his State of the Union address — 10 gigawatts of renewable-energy generation on public land.
Yet even as the Obama administration is approving projects, the federal financing programs that are key to their construction are fading.
“Congress needs to act,” Obama told about 400 invited guests gathered in a spare hangar. “They need to pass clean-energy tax credits.”

A U.S. Treasury Department loan and grant program ended in December, a production tax credit for wind farms runs out this year and a similar credit for solar is set to end in 2013.
“We need Congress to move on clean energy,” said former Gov. Bill Ritter, now director of the Center for the New Energy Economy at Colorado State University.
“But in an election year, I’m hearing that there is little chance,” Ritter said after the speech.
The administration is well on the way to meeting his federal-lands target with approximately 27 wind, solar and geothermal projects already approved and 17 projects on the 2012 federal priority list.
“There are enough projects approved and in development,” said Alan Quick, a spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management, which approves federal leases for energy projects.
Still, energy analysts and a wind industry spokeswoman caution that without financial supports, installations will falter.

Chevy Volt Fires: Government Stops Investigating Itself
(Bloomberg) U.S. regulators ended an investigation into why Chevrolet Volt electric cars caught fire, and said electric vehicles do not pose a greater risk of fire.
The conclusion by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration came two weeks after General Motors Co. (GM) told owners to bring the vehicles to dealerships for repair.
“Based on the available data, NHTSA does not believe that Chevy Volts or other electric vehicles pose a greater risk of fire than gasoline-powered vehicles,” the agency said in an e- mailed statement today.
The government started investigating the Volt after a side- impact crash test in May led to a fire three weeks later. During that test, the lithium-ion battery pack broke open and coolant leaked into the battery. When the car was physically rotated as part of the test, more coolant leaked into a circuit board, leading to a fire. NHTSA replicated the fire in November and started an official probe Nov. 25.
“GM is proud of the technological innovation the Volt represents,” Greg Martin, a GM spokesman, said today in an e- mailed statement. “We appreciate the confidence our Volt customers continued to provide during the investigation.”

(LA Times) General Motors Co. plans to bring a special version of the Chevrolet Volt to the California market that will qualify the plug-in hybrid sedan for a $1,500 state rebate and a coveted carpool lane sticker.
The Volt, which the automaker has made the poster child for its environmental credentials, has sold slower in California than its all-electric rival, the Nissan Leaf — in part because it previously did not qualify as a vehicle solo drivers could use in the state’s network of time-saving carpool lanes.

A typical electric car… takes upwards of 20 hours to recharge a fully drained battery when using an standard 120-volt outlet. While this might not be a problem for those looking to buy a second car for occasional outings, it certainly won’t cut it if an electric car is meant to be your primary vehicle.
In order to achieve a quicker charge, you’ll need to hire an electrician to install a 240-volt, 40-amp line that connects directly to the circuit breaker, a hookup similar to the one you might have for an electric oven or clothes dryer. With the increase in voltage, you can cut your charging time down to seven hours for a Nissan LEAF and four hours for the Chevy Volt, which means an overnight charge makes it a more practical purchase for daily use.
Super-fast charging stations capable of pumping out 480 volts are already on the market, and can recharge a car in 30 minutes or less. But these souped-up charging stations are currently for commercial use only because most homes can’t handle the kind of voltage and amperage required, at least not without some major rewiring of the power grid.
