The Rose Galaxy: A pair of interacting galaxies called, ‘Arp 273‘
Atheism Is Too Simple
“If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.” ― C.S. Lewis
Hubble Space Telescope Image of Arp 273 (above): The distorted shape of the larger of the two galaxies shows signs of tidal interactions with the smaller of the two. It is thought that the smaller galaxy has actually passed through the larger one.

Pamela, a regular guest of CNN, Fox News, The Washington Post and The New York Times had this to say about the contest finalists and winner:
(IOTW) Really great stuff. I hate that liberal feel good crap, ‘you are all winners!’, but there was more than one that deserved the crown. The importance of the message was a consideration I took into account as well. The Meesh art was particularly biting …. but this is an election year and that is a fight. And I mean knock-down-drag-out-save-the-free-world fight.
In a just world, these artists/illustrators would be influencing the culture and media in a much wider, far larger national arena, but the culture is under siege given the low state of the world. These talented readers are guerrilla fighters in the information battle-space. Hey, it’s what we do. And their talents were never so desperately needed. If I had the dough I’d be running these posters on the back of Time, Newsweak, Rolling Stone etc.
Of course none of this would be possible without SHN’s loyal readers and the nomination from ‘rightwingfeather‘. Thank you wherever, whomever you are.
SHN UPDATE: Now might be a good time to mention that Sad Hill News, a 1.3-year-old conservative ‘racist’ news site, hit the 2,000,000 mark a couple months back. I’m mighty grateful to you (the reader), those lurking on Facebook and the numerous sites that carry SHN (see ‘Sites Featuring Sad Hill News‘ in the right-hand column; scroll down).
An interesting phenomenon has taken place, and it started just before Thanksgiving. Life has required more of my time, reducing the frequency of posts I’m able to produce and therefore the number of comments folks leave behind – yet readership has increased (DBKP also noticed – Thanks!). So, for now I will continue thinking of SHN as my ‘community service’, or way of ‘writing my Congressman’ while hoping, praying it’s more effective.
Thank you all for growing Sad Hill News!
I’ll leave you with last year’s 2 most popular (linked/shared/ripped-off) SHN graphics:

Ugg-ly: Zappos Hackers Access 24 Million Customer Acconts
(Forbes) Twenty-four million Zappos customers are getting an unpleasant Sunday-evening surprise.
The Amazon-owned e-commerce firm has revealed that it was the target of a cyber attack that gained access to its internal network, including the accounts of 24 million of its users. Though the company says that no complete credit card numbers were revealed in the breach, the intruders may have accessed customers’ names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, addresses, the last four digits of their credit card numbers, and encrypted passwords. Zappos says it’s taken the precaution of resetting the passwords of all its customers and directing them to set a new password upon visiting the site.
“We were recently the victim of a cyber attack by a criminal who gained access to parts of our internal network and systems through one of our servers in Kentucky,” chief executive Tony Hsieh wrote to Zappos employees in an email posted to the site, declining to offer more information about the breach.
Here’s part of the email warning Zappos sent to its customers:

Muslim Brotherhood Issues Warning To America
(Sad Hill News) This morning America received a dire warning from the Muslim Brotherhood, “If the United States continues meddling in Egypt, Libya and the Middle East, we will quit supplying 7-11 and Motel 6 managers. If this action does not provide sufficient results, cab drivers and call center personnel will be next.”
Then, in a rather harsh tone, the Muslim Brotherhood threatened, “And if all else fails, we will no longer send you Presidents.”
It’s gonna get ugly, people.

Obama Asks Congress For Debt Limit Hike
(Washington Post) President Obama formally notified Congress on Thursday of his intent to raise the nation’s debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion, two weeks after he had postponed the request to give lawmakers more time to consider the action.
Congress will have had 15 days to say no before the nation’s debt ceiling automatically is raised from $15.2 trillion to $16.4 trillion.
In a letter to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), Obama wrote that ”further borrowing is required to meet existing commitments.”

Show Me The Money: ‘Jerry Maguire’ Agent Files For Bankruptcy
Known as the first super agent, Steinberg said Wednesday that he takes responsibility for debts of several million dollars.
“I just lost track while I was in rehab,” Steinberg told The Associated Press. He said he struggled with alcohol for years but has been sober since 2010.
His attorneys filed the Chapter 7 petition late Wednesday in federal bankruptcy court in Santa Ana, Calif.
The filing comes weeks after an Orange County Superior Court commissioner authorized but didn’t issue a bench warrant for Steinberg after he failed to appear in court in a case involving a $1.4 million debt. Steinberg said his attorney agreed to change the date of a hearing, told him not to show up and then failed to reschedule.
Court documents show a default judgment ordered Steinberg to pay the Irvine Co. for office space he leased in Newport Beach.
The agent said his debts are larger than the $1.4 million owed to the Irvine Co., and that his attorneys are still compiling the total. He said his only assets are some stock.
Steinberg has represented NFL stars such as Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, Steve Young and Ben Roethlisberger. He was the inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in 1996′s “Jerry Maguire.” The movie turned “Show me the money!” into an enduring catchphrase.
So. What did we learn from all this? ‘The human head weighs 8 pounds.’

Homeland Security Monitors Journalists
(RT) Freedom of speech might allow journalists to get away with a lot in America, but the Department of Homeland Security is on the ready to make sure that the government is keeping dibs on who is saying what.
Under the National Operations Center (NOC)’s Media Monitoring Initiative that came out of DHS headquarters in November, Washington has the written permission to retain data on users of social media and online networking platforms.
Specifically, the DHS announced the NCO and its Office of Operations Coordination and Planning (OPS) can collect personal information from news anchors, journalists, reporters or anyone who may use “traditional and/or social media in real time to keep their audience situationally aware and informed.”
According to the Department of Homeland Security’s own definition of personal identifiable information, or PII, such data could consist of any intellect “that permits the identity of an individual to be directly or indirectly inferred, including any information which is linked or linkable to that individual.” Previously established guidelines within the administration say that data could only be collected under authorization set forth by written code, but the new provisions in the NOC’s write-up means that any reporter, whether someone along the lines of Walter Cronkite or a budding blogger, can be victimized by the agency.
Also included in the roster of those subjected to the spying are government officials, domestic or not, who make public statements, private sector employees that do the same and “persons known to have been involved in major crimes of Homeland Security interest,” which to itself opens up the possibilities even wider.
[...] it doesn’t help but raise suspicion as to why the government is going out of their way to spend time, money and resources on watching over those that helped bring news to the masses.
The website Fast Company reports that the intel collected by the Department of Homeland Security under the NOC Monitoring Initiative has been happening since as early as 2010 and the data is being shared with both private sector businesses and international third parties.

PayPal Orders Buyer To Destroy Purportedly Rare Violin
(CNET) A Regretsy.com reader named Erica related yesterday how she sold an old French violin “that made it through WWII” to a buyer in Canada for $2,500. However, the buyer disputed the authenticity of the label and demanded his money back. When the buyer contacted PayPal with his concerns, the payment processor instructed him to destroy it and refunded the purchase price.
“Rather than have the violin returned to me, PayPal made the buyer DESTROY the violin in order to get his money back,” Erica wrote. “They somehow deemed the violin as ‘counterfeit’ even though there is no such thing in the violin world.”
He even sent the seller a photo of the destroyed violin (“The buyer was proud of himself,” Erica wrote.)
“It is beyond me why PayPal simply didn’t have the violin returned to me,” she wrote.
So why didn’t he? Apparently PayPal’s user agreement includes a dispute resolution process for items “significantly not as described” that gives it the last say on items it suspects are fakes:
“Further, if you lose a SNAD Claim because we, in our sole discretion, reasonably believe the item you sold is counterfeit, you will be required to provide a full refund to the buyer and you will not receive the item back (it will be destroyed).”
In a media statement defending the policy, PayPal said the destruction of goods it suspects to be counterfeit is in accordance with many countries’ laws. “The reason why we reserve the option to ask the buyer to destroy the goods is that in many countries, including the U.S., it is a criminal offense to mail counterfeit goods back to a seller,” the company said.
Despite Erica’s assertions that violin counterfeiting is nonexistent, experts at the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers point out that “millions” of “Stradivarius” violins have been produced by violin makers in Europe, while Antonio Stradivarius is thought to have created only 1,100 during his lifetime.
Even though Erica said she had the violin “examined and authenticated by a top luthier prior to its sale,” it’s unknown what persuaded PayPal that the item was not the genuine article. PayPal did not respond to a request for comment on that point. The company is reportedly reviewing the matter.
A few excellent comments, here: CNET News.
