Obama Phones New French Socialist President Hollande – Invites Him To The White House

(Yahoo!) President Barack Obama congratulated French president-elect Francois Hollande for his victory Sunday, but warned of “challenges” ahead, a clear reference to Afghanistan and eurozone debt crisis.

The US president was among the first world leaders to welcome Hollande’s election as France’s first Socialist president in nearly two decades, a result sure to have major implications for Europe as it struggles to emerge from a financial crisis.

Obama invited Hollande for bilateral talks at the White House later this month ahead of a G8 leaders meeting he will host at his Camp David retreat in Maryland between May 18-19, and a NATO transatlantic alliance summit in Chicago on May 20-21.

In a telephone call, Obama “indicated that he looks forward to working closely with Mr Hollande and his government on a range of shared economic and security challenges,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

Among the thorny issues the two leaders will have to address is the eurozone debt crisis, which Washington sees as a threat to its still-halting recovery after a grueling recession.

Trayvon Martin’s Father Recalls Moments With His Son, ‘My Best Friend’

(Orlando Sentinel) Tracy Martin drives a truck for a living, but his son preferred something with two wheels.

“Trayvon loved riding on the motorcycle with me,” Martin recalls. He had been teaching his son to ride, but while returning home to Miami Gardens, Trayvon asked to test his highway skills for the first time on Florida’s Turnpike.

“He just kept telling me, ‘I can drive, I can drive,’ ” Martin said.

Though they weren’t far from home, Martin had trepidations. But he decided Trayvon was ready. “I relaxed and let him do his thing. He surprised me.”

It was a proud moment for Martin, Trayvon taking another step toward adulthood. Three weeks later, his son was dead. Martin now clings to those memories.

“It’s moments like that that the public doesn’t know,” said Martin, 45. “Those were the kinds of things that I look back on and I can smile.”

Martin spoke with the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday from Birmingham, Ala., where he; Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton; and family attorney Benjamin Crump attended a march in the slain teen’s honor.

The couple, who divorced in 1999, are now facing a media firestorm together while also coping with every parent’s worst nightmare: the loss of a child.

Though they split when he was just 4 years old, Trayvon’s parents have been inseparable since his death, making virtually all of their public and media appearances together.

Martin said they remained friends after the divorce, recognizing their son needed both parents. But Trayvon’s shooting death in late February at the hands of an armed Neighborhood Watch volunteer “has brought us closer,” he said.

More than ever, “we need to lean on each other. We know we need each other to get us through this.”

‘A Very Good Father’

Before all of the media and public attention, the death of Trayvon went largely unnoticed locally. Then, Tracy Martin — a Miami native who has been a driver for Sysco Corp. for more than a decade — reached out to his sister-in-law, who is a lawyer.

“It was really the hopelessness in his eyes,” Crump said.

The overwhelming support at rallies and protests has given Martin and Fulton hope, Crump said. Martin still breaks down describing the day he found out about his son’s death, but Crump said the despondency of that first meeting has only returned once.

“The only real time that I saw that look of hopelessness on Tracy was at [shooter George Zimmerman's] bond hearing” last month, Crump said.

As Zimmerman, in a shocking development, took the witness stand and delivered an apology to Trayvon’s parents, Martin was distraught, Crump recalled. Martin and Fulton, 46, left the hearing together without commenting on Zimmerman’s remarks.

Several family friends who have spoken publicly since the shooting detailed Martin’s relationship with his son and his presence in Trayvon’s life — taking him fishing and attending football games and practices.

“Just seeing your child grow up in general is very important,” Martin said. “That was real important to me.”

Martin often tells this story: In 2004, Trayvon rescued him from a house fire after he fell asleep while food was cooking on the stove. Without Trayvon’s help, he says, he would have died. But the close bond with Trayvon that others have described began long before that, he said.

“Trayvon has been, so to speak, my best friend since the time he could walk,” Martin said.

Alicia Stanley, whom Martin married in 2005, said it was always apparent to her that Martin and Trayvon “were the best of friends.”

“He is a very good father,” Stanley told the Sentinel. She said she and Martin split up just weeks before Trayvon’s death.

Stanley said Trayvon was like a son to her, too. Martin, she said, is “a good person; he’s very kindhearted. That’s the way his son was, too.”

Martin is “trying to get justice for our son,” Stanley said. “He’s not going to rest until he gets it.”

‘It Was My Son … Dead’

Everything changed for Tracy Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford. He and Trayvon were staying with his girlfriend, Brandy Green, in the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community.

When Tracy Martin and Green returned home that night, he said, Trayvon wasn’t there.

The elder Martin said he called his son’s cellphone, but it went to voice mail. He remembered Trayvon had made plans to see a movie with a family member and thought, “Maybe they are in the movie, and they turned their phones off.”

He went to sleep that night, he said, trusting his son would return. The next morning, as he grew more worried, Martin called law enforcement and asked to file a missing-persons report.

Still, “I just knew that Trayvon’s going to be coming home with an excuse,” he said. “It was unusual for my kid not to come home, not to be answering his phone and not to call me.”

A Sanford police detective arrived. Tracy Martin showed him a photo of his son, and the detective retrieved a folder from an unmarked car.

They went inside Green’s home, and the detective revealed the folder’s contents, Martin said.

“They showed me a picture, and it was my son, laying on the ground dead.”

Obama Launches Campaign In Half-Empty Arena

(Breitbart) Barack Obama launched his campaign in unspectacular fashion today at Ohio State University, the largest college in the crucial swing state. A photo posted to twitter by Mitt Romney’s campaign spokesman Ryan Williams reveals sparse attendance. The above image, according to Williams, was taken during the President’s first official campaign speech.

During the speech, Obama ripped into the presumptive GOP nominee and discussed nation building at home, but the most newsworthy item of the day was not the talking points Obama delivered: it was the crowd… or lack thereof. According to ABC News, the Obama campaign had expected an “overflow” of people. Instead, the arena looked half-empty. The Columbus Dispatch reports that Obama organizers even had people move from the seats to the floor of the gym in order to project a larger crowd on television.

According to the Toledo Blade, the venue for Obama’s rally seats 20,000 but “there were a lot of empty seats.” Comparatively, Obama drew a crowd of 35,000 at Ohio State when he campaigned for former Governor Ted Strickland in 2010.

To hold a campaign event in a room that you can’t fill is a mistake; to promise the media a more-than-capacity crowd then fall this far short of that promise is utter incompetence. In 2008, Obama ran a near-flawless campaign, buoyed by enthusiasm and effective organizing. But it’s not 2008 any more, and on day one of the 2012 campaign, Team Obama has already made an embarrassing blunder.

After $257 Million Loss, Taxpayer-Funded ‘Green’ Energy Company Needs More Cash

(Foundry) A financially troubled green energy company has seen its stock prices plummet to below a dollar per share since receiving a nearly $250 million federal grant in 2009. The company lost $257.7 million last year. Two of its clients make up half of its business, and one is also struggling financially.

But none of that has stopped A123 Systems, which manufactures batteries for electric vehicles, from applying for another $233 million in federal backing through the Energy Department’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program, according to its latest filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission

“We have made a loan application under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, or the ATVM Program, to support our continued manufacturing expansion,” A123 said in the SEC filing. “Based on the amount of our grant award under the DOE Battery Initiative and the guidelines associated with the ATVM Program, we believe we will be permitted to borrow up to $233 million under the ATVM Program.”

Whether A123 meets that qualification is questionable. “Much of our planned domestic manufacturing capacity expansion depends on receipt of these funds [from the ATVM program] and other incentives,” the company stated in its SEC filing, “and the failure to obtain these funds or other incentives could materially and adversely affect our ability to expand our manufacturing capacity and meet planned production levels.”

The Energy Department did not return multiple requests for comment on A123’s loan application.

Even if the company is eligible for the loan, however, it is in dire financial straits, and may be a shaky bet for an administration already plagued by a series of Solyndra-esque green energy flops.

According to its SEC filing, A123 is relying not only on further federal funding, but on its two largest clients, which together account for half of its business. One of those companies, Fisker Automotive, is also financially troubled.

“For the year ended December 31, 2011,” its filing states, “revenue from our two largest customers, Fisker and AES Energy Storage, LLC and its affiliates, or AES, represented 26% and 24% of our revenue, respectively.”

Fisker, which received a $529 million loan through the ATVM program despite conducting significant portions of its operations in Finland, delayed production of one of its models, and was forced to lay off 65 employees. A pair of U.S. senators is investigating DOE’s decision to award its Fisker loan.

Janet Napolitano Says So

(NYPOST) Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that the Secret Service prostitution scandal created no threat to the safety of President Barack Obama.

“There was no risk to the president,” Napolitano told the Senate Judiciary Committee, citing information supplied to her by Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan.

Napolitano said a “thorough and full investigation is underway” and that Sullivan has her and Obama’s “full confidence.”

Twelve agents were implicated in the scandal. Eight have been forced out of the agency, one agent is in the process of having his security credentials revoked and three have been cleared of serious misconduct but face “administrative action.”

The agents and twelve members of the US military were accused of engaging in a night of partying with Colombian prostitutes and bringing women back with them to their Cartagena hotel rooms. The incident occurred prior to Obama’s arrival in the city for the Summit of the Americas earlier this month.

UPDATE: Secret Service, “We Do This Sort Of Thing Regularly”

(WaPo) Some Secret Service employees accused of misconduct in the Colombian prostitution scandal are privately contending that their conduct didn’t warrant dismissal because senior managers tolerated similar behavior during official trips, according to people familiar with the employees’ thinking.

Several of the men who agreed to resign under pressure last week are also considering reversing their decisions and fighting to keep their jobs, said the people knowledgeable about the case.

The prospect of Secret Service agents sharing embarrassing tales about rank-and-file employees and superiors partying to the hilt could bring more anguish to an agency reeling from scandal.

Traitors From Within

(Reuters) The Justice Department sued the city of Jacksonville, Florida, on Monday, claiming its use of written tests to determine promotions in the city’s fire department discriminates against African-Americans.

The lawsuit followed a more than two-year investigation examining Jacksonville’s record of promoting African-Americans for the ranks of lieutenant, captain, district chief and engineer dating back to 2004.

It came after a separate lawsuit filed last year by two dozen Jacksonville firefighters challenging the city’s promotional process. In the lawsuit, the firefighters alleged union officials unfairly shared exam questions with white workers but not with black workers ahead of the test.

“This complaint should send a clear message to all public employers that employment practices that have the effect of excluding qualified candidates on account of race will not be tolerated,” Thomas Perez, a U.S. assistant attorney general for civil rights, said in a statement.

[...] The complaint said use of the tests “has resulted in a disparate impact upon black candidates” because African-Americans pass the examinations at significantly lower rates than white candidates.

The Justice Department said black employees who do pass the tests rarely are promoted since their scores are generally lower than white workers.

“At best, these tests measure only a slice of what is necessary to be a supervisor, but they stand in the way of qualified African-Americans advancing in the fire department,” the statement said.

George Zimmerman Granted $150k Bond

(SF) After more than a week in jail, George Zimmerman just found out that he will be allowed bail on the second-degree murder charge he faces in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Judge Kenneth Lester said Zimmerman’s bond will be set at $150,000. He will be placed on GPS monitoring, and will not be released from custody today.

[...] Minutes before the judge ruled on his bond, Zimmerman took the stand and apologized to Trayvon Martin’s family.

“I did not know if he was armed or not,” Zimmerman said of Trayvon Martin on the night of the shooting. He said he’s sorry for the Martin family’s loss.

Side Note: I was living in Orlando, FL (now ‘attached’ to Sanford, FL) at the time of the Rodney King trial. Upon the court’s decision, 2 black men off the streets ran into our office and started jumping wildly about while shouting at our employees. The fiasco lasted for well over 2 minutes. Some of the women tried to hide behind file cabinets, etc. while the male employees stood guard, ready to act. Perhaps one of the strangest spectacles I’ve ever witnessed. True story. – Sad Hill

Promised I wouldn’t report on Trayvon Martin unless/until rioting begins.

This isn’t a story about Trayvon or George Zimmerman. It’s a simple post on, better yet, a perfect example of the mind-numbing government-subsidized ‘mainstream’ media mantra currently in play — 1984′s Ministry of Truth.

Keep in mind, this ‘news’ is Orlando Slantinel’s headline story today – front and center (screen capture below). And if 51% of the people living in America read and believe this perpetual tripe, then Obama happens.

Look. Even Martin Luther King, Jr. understood the result of America’s citizens failing to resist Hitler-esque propaganda:

For the record, I’ve been monitoring this so-called ‘news’paper – the Orlando Sentinel – and they have yet to post Martin’s angelic Tweets or true-to-life recent pictures. Nope. Just the heavily doctored image of Trayvon they effectively pushed/sold for weeks (see here) until they were called on it.

Recently, the Orlando Sentinel also successfully managed to bury a week-old Sanford Florida story about 2 black men beating a 50-year-old with a hammer. Hmm…

Never mind all that. Big Brother is telling us to forget the real possibility that Trayvon got himself killed.

Instead, ‘as responsible adults’, we should all be focusing on the extraneous, such as; Guns (2nd Amendment), Church, ‘Racism’ and the State of Florida, or something…

Trayvon Martin Died In Florida, Where 1 In 17 Adults Legally Carries Concealed Weapon

(OS) SANFORD — The night Trayvon Martin was shot to death, George Zimmerman was one of 1,903 residents in his Sanford ZIP code with permits to carry concealed handguns, state records show.

That would be astronomically high in some states, but central Sanford doesn’t rank in Central Florida’s top 10 ZIP codes with the most concealed-weapons-permit holders. In that Sanford ZIP code, the figure translated to roughly 6 percent of adults 21 and older.

Taking guns to work, church and play in Florida has become so widespread in the past 25 years that the state likely leads the U.S. in the number of residents legally carrying guns. With nearly 920,000 active concealed-weapons permits, the Sunshine State is home to almost as many gun dealers as its 2,300 citrus farms, according to state and federal records.

Clearly, many Floridians have embraced their Second Amendment rights. But the state has come under fire by gun-control groups, which blame Trayvon’s death on Florida’s stand-your-ground law and lenient firearms rules.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence cites the unarmed teenager’s death as reason to oppose a nationwide effort under way to let concealed-weapons-permit holders carry their handguns in all 50 states. Right now, Floridians can travel armed in 32 other states.

“We’re heartbroken about this tragedy, but we’re not surprised it happened in Florida,” said Brady Campaign President Dan Gross. “The gun lobby has worked very hard to make Florida its armed utopia with a shoot-first, ask-questions-later mentality. This is what happens when you put guns in the hands of dangerous people like George Zimmerman.”

Former NRA President Marion Hammer, the lobbyist behind the Florida Legislature’s passage of the nation’s first stand-your-ground law in 2005, would not speak about the shooting but accused gun-control advocates of exploiting Trayvon’s death.

“They let no tragedy go unused. They trample on tragedies for political advantage and political gain,” she said. “There is an investigation going on. Nobody knows what the facts are, and it’s inappropriate to make comments at this time.”

Oprah Trapped By Her Own Network Of ‘Philosophy’: ‘Won’t Be Out There’ For Obama

(Breitbart) Apparently, Oprah Winfrey regrets launching OWN, her TV network.  Appearing on “CBS This Morning,” Winfrey said, “The idea of creating a network was something that I wanted to do. Had I known that it was this difficult, I might have done something else.”

The network is struggling; Rosie O’Donnell’s show was canceled and 30 employees have been fired. Just as importantly, Winfrey said she is so busy she won’t be “out there” working for President Obama’s reelection.

[...] Now, with her media empire known as OWN on life support, Oprah might have decided that publicly backing a unpopular and divisive president might not be the best move for her struggling network.

Yet Winfrey still doesn’t get it. She thinks that her perspective rather than her personality is what really draws viewers: “I said from the beginning, this channel can’t be based on me. It has to be based on my philosophy and ideas.”

[...] The problem for Oprah is her central philosophy. After Winfrey endorsed Obama in 2007, her favorability rating dropped from 74% to 55%. No wonder she’s now shying away from political involvement in 2012.

Two Black Men Arrested In Brutal Sanford, FL Hammer Beating

(Orlando Sentinel) A tip to Crimeline has led to the arrests of two men in a brutal beating that occurred a week ago in the Midway community east of Sanford.

Julius Ricardo Bender, 18, and Yahaziel Isaac Israel, 19, face charges of attempted first-degree murder, burglary with assault or battery and armed burglary.

The victim, a 50-year-old Winter Springs man whose name has not been released, is on life-support at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Deputies were called to the area of Lincoln Street and Beardall Avenue about 6:30 p.m. March 26 to investigate a report of a man being beaten, Seminole County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Heather Smith said.

They found the victim in the woods on the north side of Lincoln Street.

According to arrest affidavits:

A witness told deputies he heard someone screaming for help and saw two men pull the victim from his vehicle. He said he watched as one man held the victim and the other beat him in the head with a hammer.

After they dragged the victim into the woods, the men drove away in his sport utility vehicle, which was later found abandoned about a half-mile away on Garbo Jack Lane.

Investigators got a break in the case Thursday, when a tip to Crimeline named Bender and gave the street name of the second suspect.

On Friday, investigators learned Israel’s fingerprints had been found both inside and outside of the victim’s vehicle.

The witness was shown photo lineups and picked out Bender and Israel as the men he saw beating the victim. He said Bender was the man wielding the hammer.

UPDATE: Orlando Sentinel Censors Race Of Victim On Purpose

(Council of Conservative Citizens) We have confirmed that the victim is white. A CofCC.org reader received an e-mail reply from the Orlando Sentinel admitting that the race of the victim was censored on purpose, and that it is the policy of the newspaper to censor race in crime stories. Also, shortly after CofCC.org wrote about this crime, the Orlando Sentinel removed the suspects’ mug shots from their online article. They eventual re-posted the mug shots probably because so many CofCC.org readers posted angry comments on their website. The Orlando Sentinel censored the race of the perpetrators in a previous article, even though they were still at large when it was published.
